VALLADOLID NORTE – SPAIN

promEUregion

Valladolid Norte is a Local Action Group, formed by 40 villages, which join efforts to achieve a common goal.

Our two main goals are to diversify the local farming production and promote our food market.

It is located in one of the longest and flattest plains of the European Union. The average population is only 8 people per square kilometre. Villalón and Mayorga de Campos are the largest represented villages with a population of around 2000 each. Cereal growing and sheep farming are two of the main activities.

From a tourists' point of view, rural tourism has become more relevant in the last five years. The Mudéjar Art presence is another of our strong appeals. These are works by Moors or Muslim architects in Christian territory after the Reconquist (from XI to XV century), who were never converted to Christianity.

We have four very important historical monuments called “rollos”.

The Romanesque dovecotes heritage makes our plain landscape different and truly beautiful. Thanks to this we are able to produce one of our most typical and more recognized dishes: the young pigeon. It is about to get the Quality Label.

We are proud to say we are home of a large number of protected local birds (e. g. great bustard, little bustard, stone-curlew, ganga and ortega). These birds make their nests and breed their young in our land.

Our cuisine makes the tourists' visits hard to forget. Some of our delicious dishes are Pardina lentils broth, young pigeon stew, roast lamb or superb sheep cheese boards. All these go with our flavoured rosé or red wines.

Last but not least, the Santiago Way pilgrimage passes through the tow on to many others as part of The Way of St. James, also known as Jacobean Route.
